Council renews downtown common-consumption permit for another year

Augusta City Council voted to renew a one-year common-consumption area permit for downtown, a state-administered authorization that allows open-container activity in a defined area under oversight of the Kansas Department of Revenue.
Staff said public safety had not experienced operational changes and that downtown businesses had given positive feedback during the pilot period. An unidentified staff member told the council, "Public safety has indicated that they haven't experienced any changes really to their operations from the addition of the common consumption." The council approved the renewal by voice vote.
The permit requires annual renewal through the state; councilmembers asked no substantive changes to the program at this time.
