The Albany City Council on Feb. 2 recognized February 2026 as Black History Month and welcomed newly appointed Police Chief Greg Galliano at his first council meeting.
Council member Lopez read a proclamation outlining the history and importance of Black History Month and urging continued work to confront racism and uplift Black contributions in education, culture and civic life. A local teacher accepted recognition on behalf of the Black Parent Advisory Group and announced a Black History Month event at the high school’s Little Theater on Feb. 12.
City Manager introduced newly sworn Police Chief Greg Galliano, saying the city is fortunate to gain someone with long public-service experience. Chief Galliano told the council, “It was a absolute honor and privilege to be sworn in today as your next chief of police,” and said public safety for him means “building partnerships” and “listening.” Council members welcomed Galliano and expressed anticipation for collaboration.
The council also highlighted the Path to Belonging exhibit at the community center and other local arts and community events.
