The Rockford Public Schools Board of Education voted to adopt a tentative 2025 tax-levy scenario that uses the full statutory CPI increase of 2.9% plus taxation of new property. The board chose Scenario C after staff presented seven levy options and revenue estimates; the motion passed on a roll call of five yes, one no and one absent.
Why it mattered: Finance staff said Scenario C would generate roughly $5.2 million and showed example impacts for typical home values. Superintendent Jarrett told the board the administration recommended taking the full CPI increase given "student need, inflationary pressures, and uncertainty around federal and state funding," noting that in prior years he had often recommended holding the levy flat.
Board debate centered on the trade-off between newly available revenue and taxpayers cost. Board member Miss Stanford moved for the 2.9% option; Miss Haley said she preferred a lower option (2.0%) and urged the district to "look more closely at our budget and see where we can make those cuts without burdening the taxpayer," citing loyalty to taxpayers. After discussion the motion to adopt Scenario C carried 5–1 (Miss Haley opposed, one member absent).
Next steps: The board adopted Scenario C as the tentative levy so the district can meet the statutorily required notice period; the board intends to vote on a final levy at its Dec. 16 meeting.
