Calimesa recognizes sheriff captain’s service and welcomes incoming captain Ernie Esquivel

Captain Northrop updated the Calimesa City Council on public‑safety statistics and personnel changes at the Feb. 2 meeting. He said Part‑1 crimes rose modestly (from about 213 to 225, a roughly 6% increase as reported) and that calls for service were roughly steady while arrests rose from 113 to 145 (about a 28% increase).
Northrop attributed the higher arrest numbers to increased enforcement activity and described steps the sheriff’s station is taking to address transient activity around commercial strips: working with business managers to obtain trespass letters, deploying a POP deputy and a CBAT deputy to offer services and outreach, and coordinating with city partners when enforcement is appropriate.
He announced that February would be his last month as captain at the Cabazon station and introduced his successor, Captain Ernie Esquivel. Northrop also noted a promotion: POP deputy Mike Hinkle was promoted to corporal and will remain assigned to the station.
Ernie Esquivel introduced himself to the council and summarized his career since joining the sheriff’s office in 2007, noting experience in patrol operations, gang unit and investigative assignments, corrections, professional standards and supervisory roles. “I’m kind of a zero‑tolerance kinda guy when it comes to criminals,” Esquivel said, and he said he looks forward to working with the city to keep streets safe.
Councilmembers thanked Captain Northrop for his service and welcomed Captain Esquivel.
