Road and Bridge Director Eric Sandberg briefed Miami County commissioners Oct. 15 on progress and near-term risks for a multi-segment paving project that includes Metcalfe.
Sandberg reported that the first stretch between Woodland and Metcalfe is complete ‘‘minus striping’’ and that crews have milled and begun paving Metcalfe. He said initial estimates for finishing specific sections were optimistic and that the current target for wrapping up that segment is the end of the week, weather permitting.
Sandberg cautioned that the next stretch (State Highway 223 east of Metcalfe to the state line) could be delayed by seasonal temperature changes. He explained the paving constraint: ‘‘40 degrees and rising, 45 ambient for pavement length’’ is the guidance for laying pavement, and crews are watching the forecast. He added that diamond cutting is planned for the segment between Woodland and Ridgeview before final striping.
Commissioners asked about sequencing and striping; Sandberg confirmed the contractor’s plan to diamond-cut, then stripe. He said the county is entering the ‘‘weather crunch time’’ for paving and that the schedule for the remaining work depends on temperatures and paving windows.
The update does not record a formal schedule change or a new contract action; it is an operational progress report to the board.
