Montgomery County Board approves $3.596 billion FY26 operating budget

The Montgomery County Board of Education voted June 10 to adopt the fiscal year 2026 operating budget, appropriating $3,595,551,906 to keep schools operating and fund district priorities.
Superintendent Thomas Taylor presented the resolution that broke down the revenue sources: $2,338,642,338 in local funding, $1,035,333,822 in state funding, $107,326,170 in federal funding, $22,024,826 from other sources, $90,846,472 in enterprise funds, and $1,378,278 in special revenue funds. The resolution also approved the FY26 special education staffing plan and directed transmission of required documents to the Maryland State Department of Education, the county executive and county council.
Board discussion acknowledged a lengthy budget process and the role of board committees, unions and staff in negotiating and shaping the final package. Several board members thanked staff and community members for their input and noted that fiscal oversight will continue as budget implementation moves forward. The motion to approve the budget passed unanimously among board members present.
The adoption sets the county’s education spending plan for the coming fiscal year and creates the baseline for implementation, reporting and the strategic plan alignment the board discussed later in the meeting.
