Garden Grove Unified School District marks 60 years with community celebration and awards

Garden Grove Unified School District celebrated its 60th anniversary at a regular board meeting that opened with a Lion Dancers performance from Bolsa Grande High School and a video tracing the district's history from an 1874 single-schoolhouse to today.

Public Information Officer Abby Broyles told the board the milestone "reflects decades of growth and shared commitment to serving our students and community," and highlighted a year of commemorations including fence banners at all 67 campuses, a mailed annual report, social media campaigns and a Save-the-Date for a community celebration on Friday, May 15 at Bolsa Grande High School Stadium with student performances, food trucks and a history walk.

The board received a certificate of recognition from the City of Westminster presented by Mayor Chi Chaweng Nguyen, who praised the district's contribution to local education. Broyles said a planning committee of district employees, including Trustee Terry Rocco, has been organizing the May event.

The anniversary presentation also noted district achievements and recognitions cited in the board's video overview, including historic awards and programmatic honors. The board and staff framed the year as both a commemoration of past accomplishments and an opportunity to engage families and alumni in district activities.

The board did not take policy action related to the celebration at this meeting; staff announced additional event details will be released in a forthcoming flyer and the State of the District event will incorporate anniversary themes.
