Middletown Board of Estimate authorizes DASNY grant, accepting ~$290,000 for Maple fitness court

The City of Middletown Board of Estimate voted unanimously to authorize the city to participate in a Dormitory Authority of the State of New York (DASNY) grant to install a fitness court at Maple and authorized the mayor to execute related agreements.
Superintendent Berthloff, who joined the meeting remotely, said the DASNY award is for "almost $250,000," and that the project would receive an additional $40,000 from MVP Healthcare. "So that cost right there, it will be completely paid for the whole thing, so there will be nothing coming from the city," Berthloff said.
The board read corrected resolution language authorizing the Board of Estimate — not the Common Council — to participate in the state grant program and committing the city "to providing any required local matches and to complying with all program requirements as outlined by [DASNY]," according to the read resolution. The mayor was authorized to "execute any and all agreements, certifications, and related documents necessary to accept and administer said grant funding on behalf of the City of Middletown." The resolution text was corrected during the meeting after participants noted an initial draft named the wrong governing body.
Berthloff said the grant covers the core fitness court installation and that the city is considering additional upgrades — such as a shade covering — in the future if funds become available. He told the board staff only needed authority to sign three grant documents that would allow the city to receive the DASNY funds.
A motion to approve the resolution was moved by Alderman Massey and seconded by Council President Rodriguez. The board voted by voice; members answered "Aye" and the presiding officer recorded the matter as resolved and approved. The board then moved to adjourn.
Next steps: the mayor is authorized to execute the required documents to accept the grant and staff may return with any further requests for local match funding or project change orders if additional upgrades are later pursued.
