The Humboldt County Board of Supervisors on Feb. 3 issued a proclamation recognizing February as National Children's Dental Health Awareness Month and highlighting local gaps in early childhood dental access.
Supervisor Arroyo presented the proclamation, which stated that tooth decay is the most common disease in children and is preventable with twice‑daily brushing with fluoridated toothpaste, flossing, and biannual dental checkups. The resolution noted that roughly "one in four children in Humboldt County will start kindergarten with untreated dental decay" and that fewer than half of children ages 5 and under who are enrolled in Medi‑Cal visit a dentist annually, language read as part of the proclamation.
Sarah Vogel, identified in the meeting as a public‑health program coordinator who attended to accept the proclamation, thanked the Board and emphasized the importance of prevention and outreach. The proclamation also acknowledged a local dental workforce shortage and supported systems changes to expand preventive interventions such as fluoride varnish, dental sealants and fluoridated water in the county.
The proclamation was presented during the consent portion of the agenda and was ratified along with other consent items.
