The Sioux Falls City Council approved a 10‑year title‑sponsorship agreement that will name the indoor aquatic facility at Spellerberg Park the Midco Aquatic Center.
Brett Collars of Parks and Recreation described the agreement as the continuation of a sponsorship relationship with Midco (presented to the council as Mid Continent Communications). Collars said the contract would take effect Oct. 13, 2026, and run through Oct. 12, 2035, with a $3.5 million base fee paid as $350,000 per year over 10 years. Paige Pearson Meyer, vice president of corporate communications with Midco, joined staff to answer questions.
During public comment, Tim Westenka asked why the new recreation pools are shorter than the existing facility and whether the design would accommodate competitive swim meets. Westenka asked whether citizens are being told "the truth" about what is being built. Collars said the city had pursued Midco as a continuing partner and confirmed that any required signage changes due to corporate name changes would be Midco’s responsibility.
The ordinance carrying the naming agreement passed on second reading by a 7‑0 roll call vote.
The agreement binds the city and Midco to the stated effective dates and payment schedule; Parks staff will proceed with contract finalization and implementation of sponsor recognition consistent with the agreement.
