Marine board approves two dock waivers, limits vessel length at one site to 65 feet

The Fort Lauderdale Marine Advisory Board approved two dock‑waiver requests at its Sept. 4 meeting after hearing presentations, neighbor objections and a staff recommendation.

At 301–319 (and adjacent) Harbor Drive, the applicant seeks to replace and reconfigure existing finger piers and mooring piles to match a new combined parcel layout. Neighbors represented by attorney Pat Rathburn said the proposal would reduce the remaining navigable channel in places and could affect operations by the Jungle Queen, water taxis and emergency vessels. Rathburn said the requested extensions risked creating “larger boats impacting navigation” and urged denial or conditions.

The applicant said the work centers docks, reduces some overhang and will not extend further into the channel than current operations. After deliberation the board approved the waiver conditionally and asked staff to draft a resolution limiting permitted vessel length at that submerged‑land lease to 65 feet to reduce navigation risk. Ted Morley made the motion to approve; the roll call produced a carried result (yes 8, no 4). The motion included forwarding the amended application to the city commission with the 65‑foot limit.

Separately the board approved a waiver at 309 Sunset Drive to rebuild dilapidated docks in their existing footprint; staff said environmental approvals were in hand and no letters of objection were recorded on the application. The vote was carried by the board and will be forwarded to the commission for final action.

Board members scheduled site visits to several properties where questions about measurement and channel width remain, and requested clearer, standardized maps and the bathymetric survey layers when future waivers are considered.
