Mayor says Norfolk Southern plans to rehabilitate five downtown Elyria bridges; grant funds possible

Mayor Brubaker told the Elyria City Council on Monday that Norfolk Southern has plans to rehabilitate five bridges in downtown Elyria, including painting work and concrete repairs at underpasses. “They do have plans, to rehabilitate the 5 bridges in the downtown,” Brubaker said, and he added that grant dollars may be available to help cover painting and underpass repairs.
Brubaker said the discussion grew out of a Zoom meeting arranged with a consulting firm and Norfolk Southern lobbyists and that he is following up with Norfolk Southern’s Washington, D.C., leadership to get more details on schedule and scope. He said he will report back to council once the city has more information about “what, when, and where” the rehabilitation work will occur.
The mayor also introduced two students from Lorain County Community College who were attending the meeting for a state and local government class and said city staff provided them with previous meeting minutes.
Council took no formal action on the bridge matter; Brubaker presented it as an update and said additional details and timelines will be provided when available.
