Pleasant Grove staff propose standard 20–25% membership discount for veterans and military

Recreation staff recommended equalizing veteran and military discounts at Pleasant Grove’s facilities to a consistent 20–25% off semiannual or annual membership rates and clarifying whether first responders outside the city qualify.

Megan, the recreation staff presenter, said the rec center currently applies a 15% membership discount to military and veterans (police/fire as employees are handled separately) while the pool listing includes a 50% discount for veterans; her review of neighboring cities showed typical discounts in the 10–25% range. "My recommendation would be like a 20 to 25% off memberships only," Megan said.

Councilors discussed proof options for first responders (pay stub, employer letter, city badge) and whether nonresident employees who work in other jurisdictions should be eligible. Staff recommended the change be reflected in the fee schedule (target Dec. 2) and that the city do additional marketing to raise awareness. Megan said current usage of the older discount amounts to roughly $500 a year in discounts at the rec center and about $810 in pool discounts for the season; increased publicity could raise participation and change subsidy levels.

Next steps: staff will provide final language for the fee schedule, verification options for first responders and a budget impact estimate before formal adoption.
