Vermillion proclaims 100th Black History Month; council appoints two to Human Relations Commission

The council received a proclamation marking the 100th anniversary of Black History Month and approved two appointments to the Human Relations Commission.
Mohammed read the proclamation presented by the Human Relations Commission in partnership with the Black Student Union at the University of South Dakota, urging reflection on the history and contributions of Black Americans. "Celebrating Black History Month gives us all a chance to pause and remember the courage, creativity, and resilience of Black Americans throughout our history," Mohammed said as he read the proclamation.
Later in the meeting staff described the Human Relations Commission’s role and recommended appointing Ashley Lemons to a term expiring May 2026 and Casey Hall to a term expiring May 2027. Staff noted Ashley currently serves as director of equal opportunity and Title IX for the University of South Dakota and highlighted her professional background; Casey Hall was described as a Vermillion resident working as a human relations manager for Walmart. Councilor Holland moved to approve the appointments, Councilor Lieber seconded, and the motion carried.
