Franklin County road department reports culvert repairs, planned lining and pothole work

Mike Deese, speaking for the road department, updated the fiscal court on recent and planned maintenance work.
Deese said crews have begun tree trimming and removal, started work in Bald Knob and patched a large cover pipe on Isaac Shelby that runs under yards, utilities and a road; replacing the pipe would require a major excavation 10–12 feet deep, so staff plan to "sleeve" the pipe using a specialty contractor rather than dig the whole run out.
"That big cover pipe you see, it is like when it runs out, it's like 10 foot 10, 12 foot deep at the end," Deese said, describing the complexity and cost of a full replacement. He added the department is caught up on salt procurement and will address potholes while the blacktop plant remains closed.
Magistrates pressed for detail on the capacity of in‑county crews and on whether novel cold‑patch materials demonstrated elsewhere would work locally. Deese said the department had tried a recently demonstrated material but did not expect it to work for all needs. The court thanked Deese and his staff for keeping projects moving through winter weather.
