Gainesville adopts ordinance requiring new car washes to recycle 50% of water

Gainesville’s Mayor and Council on Nov. 18 adopted Ordinance 2025-23, amending municipal code section 5-2-3 to require that new car wash businesses recycle 50% of the water used in their processes.
City Manager Bridal Lackey introduced the ordinance, saying the measure "codifies the practice we've already been putting in place where car washes have to use 50% of their water to be recycled." He noted that Myron, who had presented earlier, was available to answer technical questions about recycling processes. On a motion and a second from the council, the ordinance passed unanimously.
The change formalizes a standard staff said the city has been following and will place the recycling requirement into the city code. The council did not request additional study or delay; staff indicated implementation and enforcement details can be provided by the relevant departments if necessary at a later date.
