City staff updated the council on operations at the new Gonzales community center, saying the facility began operations this week with the Boys & Girls Club providing afternoon programming and other drop-in supports scheduled across the week.
The city manager said the center is already hosting partnerships with local schools and special-education staff and that staff are coordinating programming and a punch list of construction items to be fixed before final contractor departure. The manager told the council that outdoor areas are open but asked residents to avoid newly seeded grass until it establishes.
Staff said 12 charging stations are installed and that account setup and activation processes remain; the manager estimated the stations should be available within about a month. The council discussed potential fees and sliding-scale approaches for school and nonprofit use of the amphitheater and staff said partnerships are planned so schools likely will not pay a fee when the use is school-related.
Next steps: staff will return with additional information including a brochure of hours and programming and will continue coordination with partners to expand free and scheduled programming at the center.
