Summary
The council approved an agreement for Monterey County Regional Fire Protection District to provide on-scene chief officer coverage to Gonzales, intended to maintain stability while the city seeks a long-term solution for its fire chief responsibilities.
The Gonzales City Council voted to approve an agreement with the Monterey County Regional Fire Protection District to provide on-scene fire chief services for the city.
Chief Musio, who introduced Item 5, told the council the proposal is aimed at "an effort to maintain some, stability" in local fire service and described it as a longer-term, more formal arrangement than prior mutual aid responses. He said the need arose because he can no longer respond to calls and be the on-scene supervisor during larger incidents.
Under the agreement, the regional district will assign a chief officer per shift to cover calls that require chief-level response — such as structure fires, vegetation fires and major accidents — and will be available to respond when needed. Chief Musio said the partnership "dropped the anxiety level way down" among local firefighters after joint meetings and training.
David Sargenti, identified in the meeting as chief of the Monterey County Regional Fire District, introduced himself after the vote and said the district has been training with Gonzales crews. "We're just here to help you guys out," Sargenti said, adding he will work with the city manager and local chief to coordinate future options.
A councilmember moved to approve the agreement and a second was recorded; the council verbally voted in favor and the presiding officer announced, "Motion carries." The motion, as recorded in the meeting, authorized the city to rely on the regional district's chief officers for on-scene supervision and consultative support while the city pursues a long-term staffing solution.
The agreement does not specify a cost in the staff report presented to the council during this meeting. Council and staff indicated local firefighters remain the first responders and that regional chiefs would supplement local capabilities for large or complex incidents. The agreement also includes provisions for regular consultation and training between district and city personnel.
Next steps: staff will finalize and execute the agreement and coordinate ongoing training and communication protocols between Gonzales fire personnel and the Monterey County Regional Fire Protection District.
