Artist Angela Terratano described the mist‑pad mural, titled "Origins," as "an abstract mural inspired by community contributions" that uses flowing lines and vivid colors drawn from participant submissions to represent water, flora and shifting skies. Mosaic artist Rachel Rodey said her tile work was designed to "support Angela's artwork" and will wrap in seven locations covering about 210 linear feet of wall space.
Residents who live near the park praised the community process but urged refinements. Mary Elkins, chair of the Markham Neighborhood Association, asked that a hummingbird motif be adjusted because some neighbors thought it resembled a toucan; she also requested that the skate‑park wall color be closer to the purple previously discussed. Kyle Lute of Visit Vacaville suggested small graphic adjustments to kiosk cactus imagery.
Commission discussion focused on three visual options presented by staff. Commissioners and neighborhood speakers raised two recurring concerns: (1) the mural colors should remain bold and culturally resonant rather than muted, and (2) the background color choice for a skate‑park wall and surrounding tiles avoid combinations that community members feared could conflict with local gang‑color associations. Commissioners said the tile and mural manufacturer samples shown in the meeting more accurately represented final saturation than digital renderings.
Staff acknowledged budget and installation constraints — for example, mosaic walls are 1 foot high to control concrete and fabrication costs — but said some color and minor form adjustments could be incorporated before final production. The commission conducted a straw poll on options and expressed majority support for the darker background option (a midnight‑blue palette developed from community feedback) while also asking staff and the artists to prioritize the purple variant where it better reflects neighborhood preference.
A motion to "approve the draft design concept for the mist pad mural and mosaic tile public art at Trauer Park" passed on a voice vote. The motion directs staff to advance the design, incorporate the requested minor adjustments where feasible, and bring the project to City Council for the next approval step.
The commission did not commit new funding during the vote and noted that some final design details remain subject to budget and site constraints. Staff said the larger Trauer Park renovations are nearing completion and that the public art elements will be installed once construction and any final permitting are complete.
