Rio Rancho board approves three finalists in superintendent search
Summary
The Rio Rancho Public Schools Board of Education voted 5-0 on Dec. 9 to approve three finalists for superintendent after reviewing 31 applications; the district said it will post finalist schedules and host a community event next week for public feedback.
The Rio Rancho Public Schools Board of Education on Dec. 9 approved three finalists for the district's superintendent vacancy, voting unanimously after a review of 31 applications and interviews with the top candidates.
Board member Tyler told the board the district received 31 total applications presented by Ray and Associates and that the board reviewed a top 10, added an eleventh applicant and completed interviews with the top five. "We actually brought in an eleventh application," Tyler said before moving to approve the three finalists.
The board approved, in alphabetical order, Dr. Robert Dodd of Maryland; Todd Resch of New Mexico; and Dr. Heather Sanchez of Washington. The motion to approve the finalists was moved by Board member Tyler and carried in a roll-call vote: Vice President Morgan, Yes; Secretary Tyler, Yes; Board member Tripp, Yes; Board member Miller, Yes; President Galbraith, Yes (5-0).
Earlier in the meeting the board also approved the prioritized agenda and proposed time allocations by motion; that procedural vote was recorded as carried by voice vote.
Superintendent Dr. Cleveland thanked applicants for "putting themselves out" and acknowledged the time and effort required to apply. The board publicly thanked district staff and the consultants who supported the search process, naming Wyndham Kemsley, JC/JC Oliver, Lauren Hatch and Kim Vesely and noting assistance from Ray and Associates with scheduling and outreach.
Board member Tyler said the district will post additional information early next week about activities for the finalists and a community event where residents and staff can provide feedback on candidates. "There will be opportunities for everyone who would like to give feedback," Tyler said, adding that the board will review community input as the selection process continues.
President Galbraith adjourned the special meeting after the vote.
