Board hears proposal for $4,000 signing bonus for hard-to-fill subjects and extra pay for student teachers

An unidentified district staff member detailed the plan: "This is our annual signing bonus. And so for this year, we are proposing 6 through 12 math, English, chemistry, physics, world language, and special education. $4,000 signing bonus to be paid twice. So 2,000 in the spring, 2,000 in the fall," the staff member said. The presenter added that student teachers who complete their student teaching with the district and then sign a contract would receive an additional $1,500, which could bring a hire in a designated hard-to-fill area to $5,500 total.
The staff presenter also recommended limiting retiree return-to-work bonuses to a one-time payment in hard-to-staff areas to avoid repeated payouts to the same retirees.
Board members asked clarifying questions about which subjects qualify and whether the bonus varies by location; staff confirmed the list (math, English, chemistry, physics, world language, special education) and said the bonus is subject-based, not a location premium. The board did not take a formal vote on the proposal during the work session; staff framed the recommendation for later consideration as part of the budget process.
