Council authorizes lease for street sweeper; staff say cost contained within existing budget

The North Logan City Council voted Feb. 4 to approve Resolution 26-02 authorizing a lease agreement for a new street sweeper, a move staff said is covered by the department’s existing budget and intended to maintain operational requirements for stormwater and street maintenance.
Alan explained that the vendor required formal council authorization as part of the lease agreement and that the lease does not require additional appropriations beyond the current budget. “It’s a component of the existing budget,” Alan said, noting the expense will appear in the stormwater budget when departments present their budgets next month.
Council members discussed the typical lifespan and costs for sweepers. Staff and councilmembers said sweepers can be run 10 years but costs and repairs accelerate around year six; leasing arrangements often spread the cost and reduce time the vehicle is out of service. Jordan said jurisdictions typically weigh lease-versus-buy decisions based on downtime and capital availability.
Mark moved to adopt Resolution 26-02; Kenny seconded and the resolution passed by voice vote.
Council asked staff to highlight the lease costs within the upcoming streets/stormwater budget presentation so the public and council can see how the lease is funded and amortized over the vehicle’s useful life.
