Commission authorizes cost-share with BNSF for two West Fargo crossings, estimated $144,000

The West Fargo City Commission on Feb. 2 authorized the city to enter cost-share agreements with Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) for replacement of crossing surfaces at two locations.
Jerry Wallace, the city engineer, told the commission that BNSF approached the city about repairs at two crossings and that the city is being asked to participate in the cost of installing new crossing surfaces. Wallace estimated the city’s payment to BNSF for the two agreements would be about $144,000 and said there could be additional, relatively minimal costs for adjacent street removals if ties or related work require it.
Commissioner Olsen asked what costs BNSF would share; Wallace said he could look into details but did not have a breakdown available at the meeting. Commissioners noted that while the railroad owns the track, the city is responsible for the street crossings and the associated improvements.
On a motion by Commissioner Anderson, seconded by Commissioner Jorgensen, the commission approved entering into the crossing-surface installation agreements with BNSF by voice vote.
Wallace and other city staff said they would follow up on the specifics of shared costs as needed.
