Johnson County, Barnhill present phased plan for Clayton High School rebuild, work to begin imminently

Barnhill’s presentation laid out site plans and renderings showing a new main building, updated auditorium and athletic facilities, new grandstands and reconfigured parking and drop‑off loops. Pierce said the district and contractor have cleared key procurement steps: “the final GMP was set in, in October 17, and we're looking forward to a notice to proceed, in the next couple weeks, December 16,” he said.
The timeline presented to council lists Phase 1 milestones that include replacing the home grandstands with a targeted installation by May 2026 and completing the main building by 2027. The existing gymnasium is scheduled for demolition between March and July 2026 to provide temporary parking during construction; Phase 2 is expected to start in 2028 and “run through August,” according to the presentation materials.
Pierce emphasized community outreach and traffic coordination: a project website with phasing details and contact numbers for Barnhill will be published so nearby residents can reach the contractor directly with construction or traffic questions. “There'll be numbers on there that they can call… reach directly out to Barnhill,” he said.
Council members and residents who spoke during the meeting praised the project as a long‑needed investment in local schools. Mayor (speaker 1) noted the economic importance of strong schools to the area and described Clayton High School as “a community school,” saying the investment will affect local development and long‑term prospects for the western part of Johnson County.
Next steps: the town and district expect a notice to proceed in mid‑December; Barnhill and district officials said they will post phasing and contact information online and plan continued public updates as construction advances.
