Design team outlines master plan to reconfigure Glencoe library for better circulation and program space

A design consultant told the Glencoe Village Board the village’s library needs reconfiguration to improve circulation, accessibility and program space and presented a 3‑D model to show proposed changes.
The consultant said a capital needs assessment done about five years earlier identified building‑system problems and circulation shortcomings, including ‘‘confusing stair circulation’’ and low ceilings in collection areas that limit the library’s usefulness. The plan calls for reworking stairs, relocating staff suites, upgrading HVAC and foundation systems and creating a larger, daylighted discovery area and flexible plug‑in work zones.
The presenter described new rooms for children’s programs and a broadcast/production space intended to support community programming, and emphasized warm materials, daylight and sustainability measures. ‘‘We’re going to do the efficiency long term value, low part systems and materials,’’ the consultant said.
On schedule, the presenter said construction could run about two years and might be implemented in single or multiple phases so core services can continue during work. The presenter also said the library foundation will lead fundraising for the campaign and ‘‘take over the response to the campaign’’ by aggregating outreach to potential donors.
During public questions residents asked how programs and gatherings would be sustained during construction and whether the village had a phased approach. The consultant reiterated that phasing is anticipated and outlined exterior shading, glazing and insulation strategies to maintain comfort, saying the design ‘‘uses horizontal exterior shades’’ to limit summer sun and maintain winter comfort.
No formal vote or motion was recorded on the project during this meeting. The board’s discussion moved to a separate agenda item after the presentation; the design team and foundation will return with follow‑up materials for the board to consider.
The presentation and public Q&A are expected to inform next steps for fundraising and refinement of final construction phasing.
