Village staff outlined several fee and fine changes proposed in the draft 2026 budget.
On alarm and false-alarm policy, staff recommended eliminating the annual alarm permit and charging escalating fines only after six false alarms in a calendar year; fines would increase up to $750 for 15 or more false alarms. Trustees and staff debated whether the free threshold should be lower (e.g., three) and discussed changing to a violation structure rather than a fee model.
Staff proposed increases for building-permit fees (from about $8.25 to $9 per square foot for new single-family construction), higher parking-violation fees (first offenses from $25 to $50), and higher rates for commuter parking permits (annual and quarterly rates discussed). The committee also heard a proposal to pass some credit-card processing fees directly to customers in phases to align with municipal practices.
Staff framed these changes as compliance-oriented (deterring false alarms and recouping pavement costs) and as an effort to shift some burden to nonresidents for visitor-targeted taxes and fees. These proposals will be carried forward into budget and ordinance actions for board consideration.
