Elementary construction on schedule for July; board hears $160,000 playground grant and servery adjustments

Hausman Construction representative Mitch updated the board on Feb. 12 that work on the new elementary school is advancing: carpet and lockers are installed in large portions of Areas C and F, door hardware and ceiling work are nearly complete, and interior finishes are progressing. Mitch said recent dry weather allowed crews to finish EIFS and metal panel work and the project remains on track for a July completion and mid‑July move-in schedule for phases of the building.

Superintendent Dr. Alvey described interior renovations beyond the new building, including a planned servery adjustment in the existing middle school kitchen to move the service line away from dry storage and reduce tray-carry distances for younger students. He said principals and the food-service director raised the concern and Hausman and the design team (TSP) are evaluating options to avoid service disruptions.

Alvey also reported the Vermillion Public Schools Foundation secured a $160,000 grant that the district expects to use toward a universal-access playground. District funds have already been committed for upgraded equipment; the grant will help ensure accessible surfacing. The board heard the district and playground committee must finalize a footprint with engineers to avoid drainage issues and ensure safe placement.

The update included note of significant behind‑the‑scenes work—miles of cable for cameras and technology, bathroom and unisex stalls completed in the core building and continuing coordination about staging and move logistics. The board asked about timing for public tours and the district said they will plan walkthroughs and an open house in late spring or summer.
