Representatives from the USD Tiospaye Student Council requested a fee waiver to use the elementary gym for an Oct. 28 Monster Bash; Vermillion High School students described their Educators Rising chapter activities, internships and fundraising plans and asked the board to approve a trust/account for the group.
Two student groups addressed the board during visitors-to-be-heard.
Matea Yolmi and Melody Scott, representing the University of South Dakota’s Tiospaye Student Council, asked the board to waive facility fees for an open Monster Bash planned for Oct. 28 from 5 to 8 p.m. They said the event is community-focused and has been held previously at Fremont Elementary School. The board later approved the building-use agreement and asked staff to complete facility paperwork.
Seniors Ruby and Madeline presented on the newly formed Educators Rising chapter at Vermillion High School. They said the chapter currently has eight senior leaders and about 18 total members, attends monthly meetings and has participated in leadership and learning expos (including a recent USD expo). The group described internships at the middle and elementary schools, plans to compete at state and national contests, and a candy-gram fundraiser (elementary items for $2; larger items at the high school) to cover travel and registration costs. The board approved creating a trust/agency account to manage the club’s fundraising and spending, contingent on the club adopting bylaws, elected officers and monthly meeting minutes.
Board members thanked the students and highlighted staff and community support for student leadership programs.
