Council reviews donations and a state grant request for parks and gardens

Cynthia Hallaby, president of the Conservancy for Ridgewood Public Lands, asked the council to accept a $6,000 gift to finalize hardscaping under the pergola at the Children’s Sensory and Butterfly Garden, saying the Conservancy has raised more than $100,000 over 13 years for public-land projects. Staff later described the Conservancy’s planned stamped-concrete patio work, quoted at $6,450 and to be installed by B & B McEntee Construction of Wayne, N.J.
Council also reviewed an RBSA presentation for renovating Veterans Field—work on the 90-foot baseball diamond and both softball fields—with the proposed contract (to be executed by the RBSA) priced at $2,626,900 and supervised by the borough’s park supervisor. Council members thanked RBSA for the proposed donation and expressed support for moving documentation forward.
Finally the council discussed a Local Recreation Improvement Grant application for Haber Nickel Family Park seeking up to $75,000 from the state. Staff said the proposed community garden would be sited near where an old barn stood, adjacent to the existing health-barn garden, and that soil sampling would be done before construction if needed.
The council offered general support for the donations and authorized staff to proceed with grant paperwork and coordination; formal votes or final acceptances were not recorded at this workshop for all items.
