Prince George's County Public Schools confirmed plans affecting three Greenbelt-area schools: Dora Kennedy French Immersion (DKFI), Robert Goddard and Spring Hill Lake Elementary.
Jonathan Briggs said a July 12 letter informed the Door Kennedy community that DKFI will permanently relocate and colocate with Robert Goddard Montessori beginning in the 2026–27 school year. "Yes. It is a permanent move," Briggs said, describing months of coordination with DKFI and Robert Goddard principals and stakeholder meetings.
To expand capacity, PGCPS plans to increase Robert Goddard’s modular classrooms from 10 to 18 and to run team-building and transition activities over the two years before the move. "They invested in increasing the capacity at Robert Goddard, by planning to expand the existing 10 classroom modular, to an 18 classroom modular," Briggs said.
Spring Hill Lake Elementary will move into the existing Door Kennedy building for the period while its new building is constructed; Briggs said Spring Hill Lake students will occupy the Door Kennedy site through school year 2027–28, when a newly built facility is expected to be complete and Door Kennedy will be taken out of PGCPS possession.
Briggs said the interagency commission on school construction’s facility-assessment scores drove the decision to remove Door Kennedy from longer-term service because the cost to rebuild exceeded thresholds; however, he said the facility was assessed as safe for the two-year temporary occupancy. He offered to provide the Door Kennedy facility-assessment report to council and ACE for review.
Council members pressed for details about planned improvements at Door Kennedy before Spring Hill Lake moves in and requested tours; Briggs offered to arrange a site visit with the chief operating officer and to follow up on a list of planned improvements and safety checks.
Next steps: PGCPS will provide the Door Kennedy facilities report, timeline for modular expansion at Robert Goddard, and details on planned improvements and safety measures for Spring Hill Lake's temporary relocation.
