Board approves nearly $2.9 million to buy three engines and a tanker, citing long lead times

The Board of Supervisors approved a budget amendment to transfer and appropriate $2,903,389 to purchase three fire engines and one stock tanker.
County administration said the buy‑ahead will cover one engine already in the current CIP, accelerate a 2027 purchase, and replace an engine destroyed on Route 288. “By doing this this evening, allowing us to buy ahead, it saves us nearly $800,000 in the cost when it comes to inflation and future impact,” County Administrator Dr. Railey said.
Fire leadership and board members emphasized safety and long lead times for apparatus. One supervisor referenced the totaled engine in a recent crash and noted the apparatus “did its job” protecting responders. The purchase was approved by roll call vote with all supervisors voting yes.
The county described the tanker as a stock purchase to shorten lead time compared with fully custom builds; purchase orders will be issued and the county will continue coordination with Fire & Rescue staff on specifications and delivery timing.
