Meridian City Council voted on Feb. 3 to approve a $40,000 fiscal-year 2026 budget amendment to enhance the city's Fourth of July fireworks display as part of America250 commemorations.
"In front of you is a budget request for $40,000, to increase our fireworks show for the Fourth of July," Garrett, the city events presenter, told the council, saying the request came after the regular budget cycle when the national America250 initiative gained traction.
Staff clarified the amendment would increase the total aerial fireworks budget to about $54,000 and that the $40,000 would be spent entirely on aerials rather than reallocated across other activities. Renee, the parks/events representative, said the amendment would not reduce the city's baseline spending for other activities and that the parks team is pursuing corporate sponsors to support supplemental programming.
Several councilmembers voiced concerns. Councilwoman Strader said budget amendments should generally be reserved for emergencies or life-safety items and noted recently approved public safety levies when opposing additional discretionary spending. Councilman Cavanagh urged inclusivity for Meridian-based charter and other public schools and suggested seeking sponsorships.
The motion to approve the $40,000 amendment was moved and seconded and carried in a roll-call vote; the council record shows a small number of dissenting votes during the roll call.
Next steps: staff will proceed with the enhanced fireworks plan and continue seeking external sponsorships for other event activities.
