Meridian OKs donation of 37 AEDs to West Ada School District

Meridian City Council on Feb. 3 approved an agreement and waiver of liability to donate 37 automated external defibrillators to the West Ada School District, a move city staff described as part of the Heart Safe Meridian initiative to expand lifesaving capability in local schools.

"As we recognize National Heart Awareness Month, tonight's donation reflects what community risk reduction and strong partnerships can accomplish together," said Carly, a city staff member presenting the item, noting the devices were repurposed from police vehicles after the department acquired new equipment.

Tracy Garner, health services supervisor for the West Ada School District, thanked the city and partners and said the donation, along with CPR instruction arranged through a local vendor, would improve safety for students, staff and community members who use school facilities. "It's truly a gift," she said.

Councilmembers pressed staff for details during the discussion. Councilman Cavanagh asked why units that were functional were replaced; staff said the department issued new AEDs with updated technology when officers received new equipment, leaving an excess of functional older units that did not interface with the new vehicle system.

Staff said the agreement directs the donation primarily to West Ada elementary schools, which staff identified as having the greatest need; some devices may go to West Ada schools located outside Meridian. Outreach to charter schools based in Meridian was not part of the initial agreement, staff said, but the city will continue outreach through its community risk reduction division.

The motion to approve the agreement was moved and seconded in council and passed by voice vote.

Next steps: the approved agreement and waiver of liability were signed as part of the consent process and staff will coordinate delivery, refurbishment and training arrangements with the district and the vendor identified in the presentation.
