Forest Park council approves waste-hauler amendment to maintain holiday pickup and add shredding events; commercial customers to absorb increases

A Waste Management representative explained the amendment is not a renewal but an amendment to the existing agreement to add in-kind services for government buildings, incorporate shredding events (two events for residents), and adjust holiday service so Labor Day and Memorial Day are treated as normal service days rather than one-day delays. Staff said those holiday pickups are performed by Waste Management employees (not city employees), so the city’s payroll costs would not change.
Staff clarified that the rate adjustments described in the amendment are not passed to residents; the increased costs relate to front-load and roll-off commercial services and shredding/clean-sweep events. The Waste Management representative estimated the commercial sector increase at about 10 percent for the services added.
The consent agenda (including the Adobe license renewal and the waste management contract amendment) was approved by voice vote. The amendment will be returned for signature and administrative processing.
Next steps: staff will finalize the amendment paperwork; council expects the waste hauler and public works to coordinate schedules and public notice for holiday service changes and shredding events.
