The West Haven City Council on Dec. 17 approved the final site plan for the Grand Haven assisted‑living project, an 82‑room assisted‑living facility at approximately 3448 South 3500 West, subject to planning‑commission conditions that the site sign be reduced to no more than 32 square feet and no taller than 6 feet before any construction permits are issued.
Planning staff told the council the project previously received preliminary approval and a conditional-use permit; because the final building now exceeds 40,000 square feet it required council review. Justin Nielsen of Stillwater Construction described the current design as roughly two stories and said the facility now totals “just under 80,000 square feet.” Nielsen told the council the applicant provided renderings and worked with staff on construction drawings and final documentation.
Council members asked about potential future expansions and whether additional independent‑living units or memory‑care components would require separate approvals. Justin Nielsen said future additions would require another site‑plan review or permit approvals and that the developer would comply with applicable ordinances.
A motion to approve the site plan with the planning‑commission conditions was moved and seconded. On the recorded roll call the council approved the motion unanimously (recorded ‘Aye’ votes were Saunders, Morse, McCall, Dixon and Schwab). The planning staff will verify the sign dimensions before issuance of construction permits.
