City approves honorary street sign for Colonel Edward J. Baker

The Committee of the Whole voted Feb. 2 to approve an honorary street sign recognizing Colonel Edward J. Baker on North 4th Avenue between East Main Street and Cedar Avenue.
City staff said the single-block sign was recommended by a community applicant and will remain in place for 20 years. Staff also explained nominations must be sponsored by the alderperson representing the nomination’s ward and that the city will approve up to five honorary signs per year, one per ward.
Council members praised the chosen location near Baker Memorial Park and Baker United Methodist Church and asked about the installation timing. Staff said the sign is expected to be placed within a month. The motion to approve the resolution was moved and seconded on the record and passed by roll call.
The new process establishes a formal nomination-and-sponsorship pathway and gives the council flexibility to revise the timing of batch approvals in 2027.
