YUBA CITY — On Feb. 3, the Yuba City City Council unanimously appointed six seated members and three alternates to the Yuba City Youth Commission following a months-long recruitment process and interviews conducted by the mayor and vice mayor.
Recreation supervisor Justin Douthit, who serves as a youth commission liaison, said the recruitment sought applicants from local high schools and community groups to fill six vacancies and three alternate spots. He described priorities identified by the commissioners, including services for homeless youth, more recreation programs for teens, and outreach to underserved or underrepresented youth.
Appointees introduced themselves during the meeting and identified the schools they attend: Valeria Ramirez, Sana Kahlo and Elena Hartridge Gundershaug (River Valley High School); Tammy Denza and Kimberly Vanover (River Valley High School, juniors); Isla Banes and Claire Sangren (Yuba City High School); Olivia Motna and Olivia Sal (Sutter Union High School); Michael Torres (seventh grader at Berry School); and Lyric Robinson (Visions in Education Charter School). The council praised the applicants’ communication skills and energy.
Vice Mayor Pasquale, who said he and the mayor met several applicants, moved to recommend the appointments; Council member Cole seconded. The council voted unanimously. Council invited the newly appointed commissioners to take a group photo following the vote.
Douthit said the youth commission acts as an adult-advised volunteer body that assists with civic events and advises the city on youth-related programming. The commission will participate in events, develop program ideas and provide feedback to staff and council on youth priorities.
