Greenbelt honors officers who aided victims and aided arrests after Schrom Hills Park shooting

Mayor Jordan and Police Chief Bowers recognized Greenbelt Police Department personnel for their response to the April 19 shooting at Schrom Hills Park, saying officers entered an active scene, provided life-saving medical aid and supported a criminal investigation that led to two arrests. Chief Bowers told the council the response involved emergency first aid, scene security and evidence processing under dangerous conditions and noted officers ‘‘rushed in the direction of gunfire without regard for their personal safety.’’

The chief listed officers receiving letters of commendation and higher honors, including JP Dang, Lieutenant Apgar, Bridal Flores, Daniel Standoval, Kaneta Brown and Lieutenant Michael Parsley, and named additional officers and civilian staff recognized in absentia. He described a video review and body-worn camera footage used during the investigation and said some awardees responded while off duty to assist with evidence processing and scene security. Mayor Jordan said the officers’ actions ‘‘could have saved lives’’ and thanked them on behalf of council and residents.

The recognition was presented publicly so residents could see the department’s work; Chief Bowers said the awards and public briefing were intended to highlight both the immediate on-scene actions and the follow-up investigative work that closed the case. Council members and the city manager offered brief remarks of appreciation. The commendations do not convey a change in departmental policy or new funding; they are formal acknowledgements of specific personnel actions from the April response. The city did not announce additional operational directives at the meeting.
