Verona Public Library names Dawn Wayans as first artist-in-residence

The Verona Public Library has launched an artist-in-residence program and selected mixed-media artist Dawn Wayans as its inaugural resident, a library staff member announced. The six-week residency runs April 28 through June 6 and will place an artist’s studio inside the library so patrons can observe and participate in artmaking.

Library staff described the program as an effort “to support creativity, community, and connection,” saying the residency will invite patrons to watch the creative process, ask questions, view original artwork on display and join workshops for all ages. The program was developed after an open call that drew several applicants; the staff member said the library received interest from many talented artists.

The library said the residency was organized with support from Gang Arts and Art House 360 and that Dawn Wayans, who works in mixed media and incorporates natural elements into her work, was selected for the first term. “Meet Dawn Wayans, an immensely talented creator working in mixed media,” the announcement said. The staff member added that Wayans “will be working in the library for 6 weeks beginning April 28 and ending June 6.”

During the residency, the artist will maintain a visible studio space in the library where patrons can observe, ask questions and participate in scheduled workshops. The library encouraged residents and visitors of all ages to drop in and take part in the activities.
