The Longview School District board approved Policy 2255 (Alternative Learning Experience) on first reading and discussed revisions to Transportation Policy 6600, which the board opted to return for a second reading.
Policy 2255 changes are described by staff as policy cleanup: removing a named individual and replacing that name with the position title (adding Executive Director of Teaching and Learning) and explicitly naming Longview Virtual Academy where the earlier policy had omitted it. Staff said the change addresses auditor guidance and was vetted through the policy committee.
Transportation Policy 6600 updates include clarifying residency and eligibility beyond a strict one-mile radius, allowing district-determined hazardous-walk transportation, permitting transport of infants (with car-seat capability), and substituting 'vehicle' for 'passenger car' to reflect district fleets. Staff also added stronger language around school-bus trespass, noting that unlawful presence on a school bus is a gross misdemeanor unless authorized. Board members asked implementation questions about driver communications, car-seat configurations and the process for hazardous-walk determinations. Because of the breadth of changes, the board recommended bringing Policy 6600 back for a second reading so the public can review the proposed edits.
Next steps: Policy 2255 will proceed as a policy-first-reading approval; Policy 6600 will be revised as needed and returned for a second reading at a future meeting.
