Budget committee will partially fund Waunakee Community Cares Coalition after Fund 21 is exhausted

At the Feb. 2 budget-committee meeting, staff told members the Waunakee Community Cares Coalition's federal grant had entered closeout and that district staff had claimed expenses through January on legal advice. Speaker 2 said the board's previously approved one-month extension covers February and that continuing coalition operations from March through June would cost about $32,000.
Speaker 2 described several options: stop district funding after February; fully fund the remaining four months (approx. $32,000); partially fund after exhausting Fund 21; or require the coalition to use its Fund 21 dollars and cover only a modest residual shortfall (estimated $2,000–$4,000). Speaker 2 added that Jody Sorensen (formerly with the village) advised that Fund 21 could be used to cover salary and benefit expenses during the interim.
Speaker 3 said they "would not be comfortable fully funding him for 4 months" and expressed preference for option 4, putting the onus on the coalition to seek additional funding from neighboring municipalities and community groups. The village asked the coalition to pursue other entities (towns of Westport and Vienna) and will meet the coalition in March.
Speaker 3 moved to partially fund the coalition after Fund 21 is used; Speaker 4 seconded. The committee voted 'Aye' and the motion carried. Speaker 2 confirmed February is funded and that district funding going forward will depend on Fund 21 usage and additional fundraising.
Next steps: the coalition will be expected to pursue village and community funding; the village and coalition will reconvene in March. District staff will monitor Fund 21 and the coalition's fundraising progress and report back to the board as needed.
