Longview School District details Google migration, Chromebook fleet maintenance and Windows 11 plan

Longview School District’s technology team told the board on Sept. 8 that a major summer effort moved the district’s staff and students to a single Google environment and refreshed classroom hardware, while planning for a widespread Windows 11 migration and improved network backbone.
“Over 1,000 mailboxes” were migrated and “over 2,800,000 emails” moved in an eight‑day migration, Matt Keavy, identified in the meeting as the district technology manager, told the board. He said the migration included more than 750,000 calendar items and almost 80,000 contacts. “It took eight days to complete the migration running 24 hours a day,” Keavy said.
Keavy said Olympic Elementary was the focus of this summer’s classroom refresh, receiving new high‑definition laser projectors, teacher classroom computers, updated document cameras and modernized sound systems. The district also refreshed almost 100 computer lab workstations serving CTE programs at Mark Morris and other sites.
The district returns and refurbishes devices each summer, Keavy said, and central office purchases of Chromebooks are funded by the capital projects and technology levy. Keavy noted the annual incoming‑freshman Chromebook allocation is approximately 600 devices. “When I start talking about network switches, wireless technology, firewalls, classroom computers ... that’s all funded through the capital projects and technology levy,” he said.
Keavy described the district’s E‑Rate work to obtain Federal Communications Commission subsidies for qualifying network equipment; the subsidy reduced some costs to “20¢ on the dollar,” he said.
On operating systems, Keavy said the district had updated roughly 1,100 workstations to Windows 11 as of August 2025, with about 130 Windows laptops awaiting remote connection for upgrades and roughly 375 units that are incompatible and will require replacement. He said the district purchased extended security updates as a short‑term bridge and expects to complete most updates in the coming months.
Looking ahead, Keavy outlined a three‑phase infrastructure plan: wireless access point upgrades, followed by new network switches, and eventually a higher‑throughput fiber backbone. He also flagged interior security camera coverage as a near‑term focus for several elementary schools.
Board members asked about user experience and device labeling; one member noted seeing district funding stickers on Chromebooks and appreciated that visibility. Keavy also said the district is examining whether to add a “sync calendar” button on the public calendar so families can subscribe to district events in their personal Google calendars.
The presentation included a staff introduction: Keavy named Katie Goodman (student information systems coordinator), Mike Gomez and Matt Bennett (classroom technology specialists), Jonathan Diaz (phones and intercoms), Isaac Brill (server administrator) and Angelique Saunders (help desk technician).
The technology presentation was delivered as a study session; no formal board action was taken during this segment. The board moved on afterward to other agenda business.
