Mayor Hood of Gurnee delivered a State of the Village address at the Woodland Community Consolidated School District 50 board meeting on Sept. 26, telling trustees that the village values its partnership with schools and will prioritize public safety and infrastructure investment.
In remarks introduced by Superintendent Dr. Machek, Hood described the village's fiscal position and relationship with local institutions, noting that sales tax from visitors helps support services the village provides. He recounted recent infrastructure work and said resurfacing and other investments are part of the village's effort to sustain services.
Hood highlighted the village's relationship with school resource officers and public-safety staffing, telling the board those investments are not areas the village will cut: "Number 2 is is without a shadow of doubt is a deterrent," he said while describing the SRO program and its role in building relationships between officers and students.
The mayor also described village programs for economic development, grants to incentivize business investment and community-engagement efforts ranging from block-party grants to youth mentorships and environmental-sustainability work. He credited intergovernmental collaboration with helping the schools and said the village remains available to support district priorities.
Board members thanked the mayor for the presentation and the administration noted its appreciation for the village's resources that support school safety and student programs.
What's next: the district and village will continue communication on school-safety staffing and collaborative programs; SROs present at the meeting outlined ongoing school outreach and activities planned for the year.
