Fire department says crews supported storm response; six members to train at National Fire Academy

At the Feb. 3 meeting the board received Chief Phillips’s monthly report: the fire department responded to 26 calls in January and staffed an automatic response during the major storm, assisting ambulance crews by shoveling paths to reach patients.
Chief Phillips said the department used the storm response to support the rescue squad and that many hydrants were cleared by residents, which helped operations. The department canceled its regular drill during the storm night to perform hydrant clearing instead.
Six members have signed up to attend a weekend of New York State–focused courses at the National Fire Academy in Emmitsburg, Maryland, scheduled for March. The chief encouraged residents to monitor the fire department’s Facebook page for updates.
Board members also discussed the village’s historic fire siren, noting it is currently unplugged and may be buried under snow; some attendees said cell-phone alerts reduce the siren’s necessity, while others noted the siren’s tradition and role in alerting motorists.
