Resident warns Tafton–40th circle near school is hazardous to children

A Hollywood resident told the City Commission that the traffic circle at Tafton and 40th Street, adjacent to a school crosswalk, presents a hazard to children and other pedestrians and asked the city to act to reduce speeding at the exit.
Myra Weaver said drivers commonly accelerate hard when leaving the roundabout, creating a risky condition for students, people walking dogs and wheelchair users. “It’s like they’re shot out of a slingshot,” Weaver said while showing a photo she had taken of children walking home from school at the site.
Weaver said she has raised the issue with commissioners before and described herself as the head of a large local children’s arts organization that serves roughly 700 kids; she asked for signage and other traffic‑calming measures. Commissioners thanked Weaver, said the city manager and staff would review signage and calming options, and noted the city manager would follow up.
No formal traffic‑engineering action was adopted at the meeting; commissioners asked staff to study signage and calming measures and to report back about feasible steps to protect the crosswalk near the school.
