Parkview resident urges more programs and sports at Washington Park Community Center

A Parkview resident told the commission Washington Park Community Center has room and community demand for expanded programming for children and adults, and urged commissioners to include funding in the budget.

Yvonne Ledesma said the center currently offers few classes or sports and that a local survey of parents showed strong interest in Pilates for adults and dance and gymnastics for children. “The center could better support children, parents, and residents of all ages,” she said, asking that commissioners allocate more resources when preparing the budget.

Ledesma also said the large field next to the center is unused for organized sports and asked that the city help provide accessible options so children need not travel across town for activities. She framed expanded programming as both youth enrichment and a public‑safety measure. “Being able to offer events and activities can be a part of also benefiting public safety in addition to enriching our community,” she said.

Commissioner Hernandez noted there had been organized sports at the park previously but was corrected by Ledesma, who said programs stopped about six months ago. Commissioners suggested Parks & Recreation and city management review opportunities for partnerships and league coordination. No formal budget action was taken at the meeting; Ledesma asked that the issue be considered during the upcoming budgeting process.

The commission indicated staff will review whether existing programs can be revived, whether partnerships with leagues can be re‑established, and how to fund programming during budget deliberations.
