Administrators and principals told the Hendrick Hudson Board of Education on Jan. 7 that elementary ELA scores have improved and third-grade math proficiency exceeded the regional average; district leaders emphasized expanded MTSS supports, WIN instructional blocks and plans for continued progress monitoring and end-of-year benchmarking.
Dr. Lawrence Collins presented the district’s midyear curriculum update at the Jan. 7 Hendrick Hudson Board of Education meeting, highlighting improvements in elementary English language arts and third-grade math performance and outlining next steps for progress monitoring.
“We did see an improvement in that, which is exciting,” Dr. Lawrence Collins said of elementary ELA, adding that grade 3 math proficiency “did exceed the regional average.” Collins said the district is using I‑Ready and benchmark data along with a revamped multi-tiered systems of support (MTSS) to guide interventions and to align instruction across grades.
Principals described school-level implementation of a WIN (What I Need) period — separate half-hour blocks for targeted ELA and math instruction — and regular data meetings where ELA and math coaches work with teachers to form small groups and adjust instruction. Dr. Kramer, presenting on K–2 work, said MTSS meetings and weekly grade-level meetings are “so focused and well run” and serve to set clear goals for individual students.
Administrators said the district has engaged external consultants and regional math coaches to support vertical alignment between grades 3–8 and to strengthen instruction in middle-school ELA. The district also plans continued professional learning for teachers, increased use of coach-created curricular resources and an evaluation of alternate universal screening tools discussed by the curriculum committee.
Collins said the district will report end-of-year I‑Ready and benchmark data to the board and reiterated the administration’s goal of prioritizing meaningful actions over documentation. He asked community members with data questions to reach out to department leads for context.
The presentation did not include final year-end results; administrators said additional outcome data will be shared after the spring testing and benchmark windows close.
