Summary
High school principal Cody Hedwell reported year-to-date attendance of 89.5%, highlighted a mentoring program with measured gains (15% academic improvement, 18% attendance gain for participants) and summarized forthcoming changes to New York State graduation requirements.
Gloversville High School Principal Cody Hedwell told the board the building is trending toward improved attendance and academic outcomes, and he outlined how curriculum and programs will adapt to changes in statewide graduation rules.
Hedwell reported the high school's current attendance figure at 89.5% for the school year and reiterated the district goal of reaching 95% building attendance. "We're at 89 and a half percent this school year," he said, noting steady improvement over recent years.
He described the school's mentoring program, now in its second year, which has 44 scholars paired with mentors. Hedwell cited program results: "We have a 15% improvement in academic performance out of the scholars in the program, a 9 per cent reduction in referrals, and an 18% improvement in attendance with those scholars." The mentors meet weekly and each mentor has at least two mentees.
Hedwell also briefed the board on anticipated changes from a statewide review of graduation requirements that would move away from some Regents exams toward a single diploma with seals and endorsements and a greater emphasis on performance-based CTE, work-based learning and dual enrollment. He said the shift could begin with students now in seventh grade and that local implementation details remain under development.
He outlined instructional responses — expanding electives and professional development focused on student engagement — to align school offerings with the expected new diploma structure. Hedwell said staff are working to balance assessment, remediation and expanded elective opportunities as the state rolls out changes.
