At its Feb. 3 meeting the Stark County Commission held public hearings on three separate 2023 property abatement requests and took formal action on each.
Sanford's Grub & Pub: County tax director Natalie Wandler and Jim Dahl of Ryan LLC presented background and valuation offers. Dahl said his client increased an offer to $1,700,000 based on rent and sales comparables. Commissioner Claris moved to endorse the City of Dickinson's recommended reduction to $1,700,000 for the 2023 tax year; roll-call vote was unanimous and the motion carried.
Menards (Westridge): Dahl asked the county to consider an offer of $23,280,000 (not formalized) and raised concerns about equalization compared with older comparable properties. The city recommended no change to the assessment. Commissioner Claris moved to keep the valuation as recommended by the city; the motion carried by roll-call vote.
SpartanNash: Dahl presented a certified appraisal concluding a value of $5,630,000 and requested a settlement in the $6.36M range; the city recommended a reduction to $7,500,000. The commission moved to accept the city's recommendation to set the 2023 valuation at $7,500,000, and the motion carried by roll-call vote.
Votes at a glance: - Sanford's Grub & Pub (2023) — motion to reduce to $1,700,000 — outcome: approved (roll call, all ayes). - Menards (2023) — motion to maintain city's valuation (no change) — outcome: approved (roll call, all ayes). - SpartanNash (2023) — motion to reduce to $7,500,000 — outcome: approved (roll call, all ayes).
Why it matters: Abatement decisions change taxable values and affect county and municipal tax receipts. Each action endorsed the City of Dickinson's recommendation after evidence from the property representatives and appraisal materials.
