The Crown Point Board of Public Works and Safety approved two time‑sensitive items at its Feb. 4 meeting: the purchase of a technical rescue specialty box truck for the fire department and authorization for tree removals at the forthcoming wastewater treatment plant site.
Fire Chief described the purchase as a replacement for two aging technical rescue trailers and said the box truck will carry specialized gear for high‑angle, confined‑space, trench and structural collapse rescue. The total purchase price presented was $243,004.95, which staff said includes a $2,150 freight charge. Staff estimated the truck could be in service by summer following outfitting; the board approved the purchase by motion and voice vote.
Separately, public works staff presented three proposals for tree and vegetation removal on the new wastewater‑treatment property and the water‑main travel path. Staff said the work is time sensitive because state and federal rules (protecting the brown bat) prevent tree removal after March 1 until October. The city recommended accepting the proposals and authorizing the mayor to execute the lowest responsible proposal that meets SRF qualifications once SRF confirms eligibility; Bob Clemens recused himself from that vote. The board approved the authorization by motion and voice vote.
Both approvals were recorded as motions and passed; staff will proceed with procurement and SRF coordination to complete tree removals before the ecological deadline.
